Amen."&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The first thing that strikes me is the reminder that Jesus gave himself for our sins. With that reminder comes all the details of what he went through here on earth (the betrayal, the waiting for the soldiers to come take him, the beating, torture, ridicule, and then death on the cross) and then what happened afterward (he returned to life, he let himself be seen here on earth, and then he went to sit at the right hand of the Father and is reigning in heaven still).  It is so humbling to have this reminder of how much God sacrificed for us when I know full well how many times I have failed to do what is right. Which of course brings to mind just what Paul has prayed for in verse 3:  "grace and peace ...from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ." Only God's grace can forgive us our sins and bring us peace in spite of them. The peace which God gives is not hindered by circumstance, but surpasses all understanding and is an incredibly precious gift.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Isn't it interesting that Paul begins his letter with a prayer? Imagine if you began the letters- or in this day and age, emails- that you wrote with a prayer. How might that effect the content of your letters?  I imagine it would certainly change the tone of my letters or in the very least shift my mindset as I wrote them. Certainly it may not be wise to begin a letter to some nonbelievers with a prayer. They would likely be offended or at least annoyed, but perhaps we could adapt a different form of this. See, I think that the prayer at the beginning of Paul's letter is a reflection of the fact that he was constantly praying and thus it just naturally came out in his writing. So, as a step in that direction, perhaps we could develop a new habit and try taking a moment to pray before we write our letters or send our emails. I think this is a wonderful reminder for all of us that we are not sent or made by man or to please man, but instead were have been created by Christ and He has placed us where and when we are for His divine purpose.  Our purpose is greater than us. We need to be focused not on what we want to get out of our life, but to continually seek what God wants from us. Why has He placed us where we are? What is His purpose for us? Are we seeking to fulfill our purpose as described by the Bible? Are we focused on God or ourselves? But I certify you, brethren, that the gospel which was preached of me is not after man. For I neither received it of man, neither was I taught [it], but by the revelation of Jesus Christ............To reveal his Son in me, that I might preach him among the heathen; immediately I conferred not with flesh and blood: Neither went I up to Jerusalem to them which were apostles before me; but I went .................And they glorified God in me. "&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;It is tempting, sometimes, to pass over the "formal" greetings of the epistles (letters to the churches).  After all, it's just an overly long "hello", right? Yes and no.  Technically it is "just" an introduction of self by the author... HOWEVER this introduction can be subtly and vitally important to setting the tone of the entire letter.  When seen in that light, skipping over it can result in a decreased understanding of the full meaning of the epistle.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Galations is a perfect example of this.  Paul opens his epistle by introducing himself as "an apostle".  He further emphasizes his authority by stating that he is NOT sent by men, but by GOD.    This introduction is making a point and this point is repeated throughout the first chapter. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Paul is dealing with a situation in the Galation church where others are teaching a false doctrine. His first step in dealing with this is to illuminate the fact that these others are sent by MEN, are seeking to please MEN, and have consulted other MEN in forming their beliefs and teachings, whereas Paul was sent by GOD, is seeking to please GOD, and had no need to consult other men regarding his beliefs and teachings because GOD Himself had taught Paul directly through divine revelation. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Note that Paul did not confer with other men nor seek out other men for further teaching before setting out to obey God's command to "preach him among the heathen".  God's teaching was sufficient, and so he set out "immediately."&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I particularly like the last verse in the chapter which seems to declare that Paul's purpose was fullfilled on this point:  He did not seek to please men but to glorify God. The last verse states that he was not glorified for himself, but that GOD was glorified IN him. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Two thoughts occur to me in reading this chapter which apply to my life.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;First, I think of my previous timidity in discussing scripture with others for fear of  1)screwing it up and causing someone to turn away from God, 2)looking foolish, 3)offending someone.  Well, the first fear has been conquered with a right understanding of how salvation comes about, and the second and third are conquered by a right understanding that it is not important that the person with whom I am speaking think me a "brilliant theologian" nor is it important that they like me as a person.  What is more important than their view of me is their view of God.  If I simply proclaim God's Word with a right heart steeped in prayer and study, then I can trust in God to handle the rest.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Secondly, I wonder: Is God glorified in &lt;em&gt;me&lt;/em&gt;? Do I seek His glory? Or my own? What do my actions say? Do they agree with the words I would use to answer these questions? Please feel free to add some of your own to this brief list.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Job 2:10 "He replied, 'You are speaking like a foolish woman.  Shall we accept good from God, and not trouble?'"&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Philippians 4: 6-9 "Do not be anxious about anything but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable - if anything is excellent or praiseworthy - think about such things. Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me - put it into practice. And the God of peace will be with you."&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Philippians 4:11-13 "I am not saying this because I am in need, for I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances. I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. The Spirit resides in us and gives us the power to love and serve in Jesus' name. When we live a life of ministry we do not do this in the flesh, but in the power of God through the Holy Spirit. The amazing gift of God to us that has sealed us for the day of redemption is the unique identity of God in us, giving us the power to serve and love. Without the Holy Spirit, nothing eternal or spiritual would take place in and through our lives. (Gen. 2:23)&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The Hebrew word for Eve’s name is, “Chavvah” {khav-vaw'}. It is defined as “life” or “living.” Scripture itself defines her name as meaning “mother of all the living.”&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;It is interesting to make a comparison of Adam’s name- which means “red earth” and is therefore associated with death- and Eve’s name – which means “mother of all living.”&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Eve, until now, had simply been called “woman”. In Hebrew the word is, “'ishshah” {ish-shaw'} and means “woman, wife, or female.” Until now, her role had simply been that of wife.  Now, Adam gave her a new name, “Eve”, which identified her as a mother. (Although the blessing to increase in number had been given in Gen 1:28, no child had yet been born.)&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Adam’s choice of name clearly shows that he was paying attention to the serpent’s curse when God spoke of the woman’s seed crushing the head of the serpent. His naming of Eve also seems to indicate his repentant heart and renewed faith in God’s Word, both in the implied promise given within the context of the curse, and in the continuance of God’s original blessing given in Genesis 1: 28, “….Be fruitful and increase in number; ….” .&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;Verses 21 – 24 &lt;/span&gt;reveal God’s incredible mercy and grace. Despite their incredible sin, He is compassionate toward their shame and provides them with clothing. He is concerned for their souls and protects them from their own wickedness by placing a barrier between them and the tree of life.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;These verses are also the first record of death in scripture. The animals whose skin was used must have been slain. So it is important to ask, “Why were these animals killed”? The answer: to cover the shame of Adam and Eve- to symbolicly cover their sin. Just as later jews would sacrifice a lamb at the altar, this was a symbolism of the ultimate sacrifice to come- Jesus Christ the Lamb of God sacrificed to cover our sin and shame. Also, it is important to notice, that in this original covering, Adam and Eve had no part in it. &lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;God&lt;/span&gt; provided the covering. They did not/could not cover themselves.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;Chapter 4 verse 1:&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Although the blessing/command to increase in number was given in Gen. 1:28, it is not until after the curse (in chapter 4 verse 1) that Adam lays with his wife. In fact, this is recorded as his second act after receiving his sentence. (His first being to rename Eve.) This would seem to be further proof of his repentant heart, for he is now acting in faith and obedience to God’s commands and blessings.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;God’s grace and faithfulness is confirmed in the birth of Cain.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Eve recognizes this and gives God credit. Remember that her original sin was wanting to be God’s equal. In this verse she now recognizes her need for and inferiority to God by acknowledging that only with God’s help was she able to give birth.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;**What a humbling truth, that it is so often only&lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt; after&lt;/span&gt; we sin and are shown forgiveness that we then find a renewal in our faith in God? However, it is a VITAL detail of this verse which cannot be overlooked.  So I have continued to study it in hopes of being able to formulate the right words.  As I have studied, I have come across a commentary by Matthew Henry. What he has to say regarding this detail of verse 15 is so well written, and includes so many other biblical references that, I cannot find my own words to be sufficient.  So I am going to depart from my usual method and here simply paste a copy of what Matthew Henry has written. :&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;“A gracious promise is here made of Christ, as the deliverer of fallen man from the power of Satan. Though what was said was addressed to the serpent, yet it was said in the hearing of our first parents, who, doubtless, took the hints of grace here given them, and saw a door of hope opened to them, else the following sentence upon themselves would have overwhelmed them. Here was the dawning of the gospel day. No sooner was the wound given than the remedy was provided and revealed. Here, in the head of the book, as the word is (Heb. 10:7), in the beginning of the Bible, it is written of Christ, that he should do the will of God. By faith in this promise, we have reason to think, our first parents, and the patriarchs before the flood, were justified and saved and to this promise, and the benefit of it, instantly serving God day and night, they hoped to come. Notice is here given them of three things concerning Christ:—(1.) His incarnation, that he should be the seed of the woman, the seed of that woman; therefore his genealogy (Lu. 3) goes so high as to show him to be the son of Adam, but God does the woman the honour to call him rather her seed, because she it was whom the devil had beguiled, and on whom Adam had laid the blame; herein God magnifies his grace, in that, though the woman was first in the transgression, yet she shall be saved by child-bearing (as some read it), that is, by the promised seed who shall descend from her, 1 Tim. 2:15. He was likewise to be the seed of a woman only, of a virgin, that he might not be tainted with the corruption of our nature; he was sent forth, made of a woman (Gal. 4:4), that this promise might be fulfilled. It is a great encouragement to sinners that their Saviour is the seed of the woman, bone of our bone, Heb. 2:11, 14. Man is therefore sinful and unclean, because he is born of a woman (Job 25:4), and therefore his days are full of trouble, Job 14:1. But the seed of the woman was made sin and a curse for us, so saving us from both. (2.) His sufferings and death, pointed at in Satan’s bruising his heel, that is, his human nature. Satan tempted Christ in the wilderness, to draw him into sin; and some think it was Satan that terrified Christ in his agony, to drive him to despair. It was the devil that put it into the heart of Judas to betray Christ, of Peter to deny him, of the chief priests to prosecute him, of the false witnesses to accuse him, and of Pilate to condemn him, aiming in all this, by destroying the Saviour, to ruin the salvation; but, on the contrary, it was by death that Christ destroyed him that had the power of death, Heb. 2:14. Christ’s heel was bruised when his feet were pierced and nailed to the cross, and Christ’s sufferings are continued in the sufferings of the saints for his name. The devil tempts them, casts them into prison, persecutes and slays them, and so bruises the heel of Christ, who is afflicted in their afflictions. But, while the heel is bruised on earth, it is well that the head is safe in heaven. (3.) His victory over Satan thereby. Satan had now trampled upon the woman, and insulted over her; but the seed of the woman should be raised up in the fulness of time to avenge her quarrel, and to trample upon him, to spoil him, to lead him captive, and to triumph over him, Col. 2:15. He shall bruise his head, that is, he shall destroy all his politics and all his powers, and give a total overthrow to his kingdom and interest. Christ baffled Satan’s temptations, rescued souls out of his hands, cast him out of the bodies of people, dispossessed the strong man armed, and divided his spoil: by his death, he gave a fatal and incurable blow to the devil’s kingdom, a wound to the head of this beast, that can never be healed. As his gospel gets ground, Satan falls (Lu. 10:18) and is bound, Rev. 20:2. By his grace, he treads Satan under his people’s feet (Rom. 16:20) and will shortly cast him into the lake of fire, Rev. 20:10. We       believe that the Lord Jesus Christ accomplished our redemption through       His death on the cross as a representative, vicarious, substitutionary       sacrifice; and that our justification is made sure by His literal, physical       resurrection from the dead (Rom. 3:24; I Pet. 2:24; Eph. 1:7; I Pet. 1:3-5).       We believe that the Lord Jesus Christ ascended into heaven and is now exalted       at the right hand of God, where, as our High Priest, He fulfills the ministry       of Representative, Intercessor, and Advocate (Acts 1:9, 10; Heb. 7:25,       Heb. 9:24; Rom. 8:34; I John 2:1-2). &lt;/p&gt;       &lt;p&gt;Why this is important: &lt;/p&gt;       &lt;p&gt;Jesus, the God-Man, is the unique revelation of God and the Savior of       God's children. He has declared Himself to be the only way to the Father       (John 14:6). In His sinless state, as God and man, we have obtained a perfect       Savior to satisfy God's justice and judgment. &lt;/p&gt;       &lt;p&gt;This reality calls us to a life of mission to minister to those whom He       sought (Is. 61:1-3). We see ourselves as deserving nothing yet receiving       everything necessary to have a right relationship with the Father through       the work of the Son. As Jesus initiates with us, so He calls us to initiate       with the lost. His love demonstrated towards us while we were yet sinners       compels us to follow the same pattern and walk as He walked in the pursuit       of the lost. Then, answer these questions (either as a posted Comment, or just in your own mind):&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;1) Do you believe that God can change your attitude?&lt;br /&gt;2) Do you believe you have to do something (i.e. have a soft/willing heart) before God can/will change your heart?&lt;br /&gt;3) What about changing the heart/attitude of a sinner?&lt;br /&gt;4) Does God need permission to change someone’s heart?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I’ve found these questions to be very revealing in my own study. It seems to imply that some level of pain in childbearing had already existed. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;It is important to understand the true meaning of the word “desire” as used in this verse.  In today’s culture, desire is often associated with sex or lust.  However, when you look up the Hebrew word that is actually used here, t@shuwqah {tesh-oo-kaw'}, you find that it is defined as: 1) desire, longing, craving, a) of man for woman, b) of woman for man, c) of beast to devour.  T@shuwqah is from the root word, shuwq {shook}, in the original sense of stretching out after.  The word, shuwq {shook}, is translated as “overflowing.”  Thus, it seems safe to say that this would be an overwhelming desire.  Furthermore, the word that is used for “desire” in this verse is also the same word that is used in Geneseis 4:7 when speaking of sin’s desire to rule over Cain.  Just as sin desires to rule over Cain, so Eve will now desire to rule over her husband.  This conclusion is confirmed by the rest of the verse which states: “and he will rule over you.” A once harmoneous relationship has now become embattled by sin. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;It is also important to note that this verse is specifically addressing &lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;husbands&lt;/span&gt; not men in general.  Women are not to be ruled by all men, but by their husbands.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;Verse 17:&lt;/span&gt;  Adam did not sin because he listened to and trusted his wife.  Adam sinned because he listened to and trusted his wife &lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;above God&lt;/span&gt;.  This distinction is made clear by God’s reiteration of His command not to eat the fruit of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.  In other words, God is saying, “Look, I told you one thing, your wife told you another, and you chose to listen to her instead of Me.” &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;Verses 17 – 19: &lt;/span&gt; Notice that God does not say the ground is cursed because of the serpent, or the woman.  God says to Adam “Cursed is the ground &lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;because of you&lt;/span&gt;”.  He then goes on to describe the struggle man will endure in trying to produce food. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;**Remember that man was ever intended to be idle, -see Gen.1:29, 2:15- but now the work of producing something to eat would be a burden instead of a blessing.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Lastly, God reminds Adam of where he came from- dust.  The last part of this curse is a reference to death, but it is also a humbling reminder for Adam.  Adam has sinned in trying to be like God.  Here, God reminds Adam that he would not exist apart from God.  He reminds him that Adam is the created and only God is the Creator. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;**I find an interesting theme in the sentencing of all 3 sinners (the serpent, Adam, and Eve).  Each of the curses addressed to them deals with conflict brought on by sin, and each deals with one’s desire to be superior.  Just as they attempted to become equal with God by eating the fruit, now they are all cursed to struggle endlessly and fruitlessly for a higher position.  The serpent will wish to conquer/destroy the woman and her offspring, but she shall crush his head.  The woman shall desire to rule over her husband, but he shall rule over her.  The man shall wish to produce food from the earth, but it shall produce thorns and thistles for him.  How humbling for the man! In regards to the serpent, God bypasses arraignment and moves immediately to sentencing. Also, God grants no reprieve and leaves the serpent no room for hope of redemption (unlike Adam &amp; Eve). The serpent’s curse is final.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;Verse 14&lt;/span&gt;: How appropriate it is that the serpent who used pride to entice the woman to eat, is now humbled by having to move about on his belly and eat dust.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;**Reminds me of the saying, “let the punishment fit the crime.”&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In &lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;verse 15&lt;/span&gt;, the serpent’s ability to strike at man is limited to the man’s heel, while man is permitted a vital, crushing blow to the serpent’s head. Of the two, who is depicted as the victor here?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In Genesis 3: 1 – 5, the woman and the serpent appear to be having an amicable- even friendly- conversation, in that no hostility toward one another is expressed. Notice, then how God’s curse upon the serpent in &lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;verse 15&lt;/span&gt; includes an ongoing enmity between the woman and the serpent. That means that He alone is God and there is none besides Him. In believing this we understand that many souls have place their hope in a god who is not there. Islam, Buddhism, Hinduism, as well as American pluralism wrongly assume there are many roads to the same God. In Scripture God reveals Himself as the only true God. Like a father whose child is curled up face down and “hiding” in the middle of the floor, God calls out to them.  In his response, Adam confesses that he hid because he was naked- his sin was exposed.  He was again trying to hide his shame.  &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Although, God obviously knew what had happened, he asks Adam, “Who told you that you were  naked? Have you eaten from the tree that I commanded you not to eat from?”  This gives Adam an opportunity to confess his sin and request forgiveness.  Instead he chooses to pass the blame.  What may, at first, seem astounding is that not only does he attempt to pass the blame to Eve, but also to God for giving him Eve.   Yet, in light of the fact that Adam and Eve’s sin had come forth from a desire to be equals with God, is it really so surprising that when confronted with his downfall, Adam would try to lower God to his own standards by accusing Him of also having failed in some way?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;When God then gives Eve an opportunity to confess her sin, she too attempts to pass on the blame.  She tells God, “The serpent deceived me and I ate.”  In other words, “It’s not my fault the serpent tricked me.”&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;**It is easy to sit in judgment on Adam and Eve’s actions in this chapter:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Q:  How could they be so foolish as to believe a serpent over God?&lt;br /&gt;– Have you never been unable to answer a question regarding God’s Truth?  Have you never been deceived- even temporarily?  &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Q: How could they be so foolish as to think that they could hide their sin / hide from God?&lt;br /&gt;    - Have you never felt that you could not approach God before you’d made some atonement for your own sin?  Have you never felt that you had to let a certain period of “self-flogging” pass before you could really ask God for forgiveness?  These, too are ways of trying to erase your own sin through your own power.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Q: How could Adam be so brazen as to attempt to blame God for the sin which he commited?&lt;br /&gt;    - Have you never treated God as your equal?  Taken your relationship with Him for granted?  Thought of Him as your friend more than your Lord? (Don’t answer too quickly- examine your actions first.  Do your actions declare that God is your Lord or have they sometimes been less respectful?)&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Q: Why did they not just confess their sins and ask for forgiveness? How could they think passing the blame would actually work?&lt;br /&gt;    - Right.  Like you’ve never tried to pass the blame?  Like you’ve never put off confessing your own sins?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;font-size:130%;" &gt;It is easy to condemn Adam and Eve as sinners. The Bible teaches in Rom. 10:17, "So then       faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God". Therefore the       Bible is our tool to know and understand who God is according His own self-description,       it is our tool to grow in faith and maturity and hold out the promises       that God has given us. We take it literally. God's truth is the anchor       for our soul. I happened across my church's official doctrinal statement this morning (yes, of course, I've read it before) and I realized that attempting to summarize what it is that I believe is one of those times.  Therefore, I am going to post a portion of this statement each day here on my blog.  I will include a link to the full statement in the title of each of these posts.  My hope is that doing this will give you a better idea of what it is that I believe and, more importantly, that it will inspire you to ask questions and/or make comments on what is being posted. They were to be pleasing to the eye and good for food. We are also told that there were two special trees that were unique from the others. How do we know they are unique? They are specially mentioned with specific names: “the tree of life” and “the tree of the knowledge of good and evil”.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In &lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;verses 10-14&lt;/span&gt; we learn that “a rive watering the garden flowed from Eden” and that “from there it was separated into four headwaters.” The verses go on to give each headwater’s name and location. These names would have been the current names in use at the time Moses wrote the book of Genesis. The purpose seems to have been to give a general location for the Garden of Eden. However, two of the names and some details given have lost their meaning over the passage of time and so the locations described are not clear.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;*I wonder if there is any significance to the number of headwaters??&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In &lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;verse 15&lt;/span&gt; we are reminded that God put man in the Garden of Eden, but this time with the added detail that man was put there for a reason. He was to work the garden and take care of it.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;*Notice that man was to work even before “the fall.” He was never intended to be idle.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In &lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;verses 16-17&lt;/span&gt; God gives His first command to the man: “You are free to eat from any tree in the garden; but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil,”&lt;br /&gt;But God does not stop with just the command. He even goes on to graciously give a reason for His command: “for when you eat of it you will surely die.”&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;*Certainly the King of all creation was not required to give such an explanation. He might simply have stated His command and expected it to be obeyed. Instead, He chose to show incredible caring and grace in choosing to give this explanation.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In &lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;verse 18&lt;/span&gt; God makes a statement that explains His purpose in creating a woman: to make a “helper suitable for him” and that he may not be alone.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;*If a woman takes exception to being man's helper, she should know this:  The word translated in this verse as "helper" is the Hebrew word "ezer".  This same Hebrew word is used to describe God in many O.T. verses.  (For example: Ex. 18:4 ; Duet. 33:29 ; Psa 33: 20 , 70:5 , 115:9 -11 ,  &amp; especially Hsa 13:9 where God refers to himself with this word!)&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In &lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;verse 19&lt;/span&gt; we are reminded that God created all the beasts of the field and all the birds of the air. However, we are now told that even though God created them, He gave man the privilege of naming them.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;Verse 20&lt;/span&gt; confirms that the man accepted this gift and did indeed name all the livestock, birds of the air, and beasts of the field. It then goes on to say that Adam (this is the first mention of the man’s name) was not able to find a suitable helper among the animals.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;*It is clear that this was not a surprise to God, for when he mentioned man needing a suitable helper (v18), He did not say, “I will &lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;find&lt;/span&gt; a helper suitable for him.”  Instead, He said, “I will &lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;make&lt;/span&gt; a helper suitable for him.”&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In &lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;verse 21 &lt;/span&gt;we learn that God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep, took one of the man’s ribs, and closed up the place with flesh.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;*Note the man’s total lack of aid in this.  This was something God was doing.   Man had no active part in it.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;*It is also a bit humorous to note that this reads almost as the world’s first anesthetized surgery. Talk about ahead of your time! ;-D he he&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In &lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;verse 22&lt;/span&gt; we are told that God made a woman from the man’s rib and then brought her to the man.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;*Again I notice man’s total lack of contribution and God’s truly awesome power of creation.  It is a humbling contrast.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;*Also, I find it interesting that the verse seems to imply that the man was not able to watch the woman being formed, for God first made her, then brought her to him.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In &lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;verse 23&lt;/span&gt; we have man’s response to God’s creation of woman. In his response he names the new creation “woman” as a confirmation that she was made from a part of him.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;Verse 24&lt;/span&gt; makes the connection between what has just been described (the creation of man &amp; woman) and the institution of marriage. It also establishes some of the method of marriage- that the man must leave his father and mother and be united to his wife. And it refers symbolically to the nature of marriage as being irreversable.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;*The verse begins with the words, “for this reason”.  &lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;Q:&lt;/span&gt; What reason? &lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;A:&lt;/span&gt; “for she was taken out of man.” (v23)&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;*”they will become one flesh” That which is one cannot/should not be divided into two.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;*It seems obvious from the context of this verse that marriage is intended to be a monogamous relationship which is to continue for the duration of their lifetime.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;Verse 25&lt;/span&gt; provides us with some information that will help us to have greater insight into the story of “the fall” which follows in chapter 3. It tells us that both the man and his wife were naked and yet felt no shame. It also points out that because there had been no rain and there was yet no man to work the earth, “no plant of the field had yet sprung up.”  &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In &lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;verse 7&lt;/span&gt;, we learn that God formed man from dust of the ground.  Not gold dust, or even very fine dust.  Just dust of the ground.  Ordinary dust.  It is humbling to note that without God’s power we would be no more than ordinary dust.  It is awe inspiring to note that God’s power is so incredible that He can create something as amazing as the human body from mere ordinary dust. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;Do you ever wonder:&lt;/span&gt; “Why did God create me?” – “Why did God make my body the way that He did?” – “Why did God take the time to make me different?”&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In &lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;verse 7&lt;/span&gt;, we also learn that God breathed the breath of life into the nostrils of man and that that is what caused him to become a living being.  Dust could not form itself into a body.  A body could not give itself life. Well, the explaination is that my friend and I have begun exchanging Bible study notes via email, so I figure, as long as I'm online, why not post my notes here too?  This will be a greatly different format than I usually post in, as these are my raw, unedited, self-audienced notes (directly from my notebook), as opposed to my previous writings which were more thought out and streamlined for better communication.  None the less, I think these are interesting (of course I wrote them ;-D) and may be of use to others in their studies, so I am posting them here.  They are meant to be read with your Bible open before you, as the verses are not directly quoted.  (I use an NIV Bible.) That said, here they are:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Genesis 1 - 2:3 (The first 7 days)&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;1:1 God created heaven &amp; earth.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;1:2 God, the Holy Spirit, was OVER the waters.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;1:3 God merely SPOKE light into existance. WOW! Powerful words!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;1:4 - 1:5 God separated darkness from light &amp;amp; created time.  He specifically says that light is good.  He took the time to designate the names, "day" and "night".&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;1:6 - 1:8 God created the sky intentionally. Time continues in the form of days.  He named the expanse "sky".&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;1:9 -1:10 Not only did God intentionally create the land and the seas, He also named them.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;1:11 -1:13 God seems like the ultimate artist, commanding a paint brush with His mere words.  Yet His creation - His art- is not only beautiful, but practical as well.  Unlike most artists, He does not merely name the finished whole product, but takes the time to individually name each aspect of it.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;1:14 -1:19 God has already created time and now He is creating a way of measuring it.  He is also creating the use of lighting the earth.  For what purpose has He done this? Whom is He lighting the earth for? Who does He expect to count the days, years, and seasons?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;1:20 - 1:25 There seems to be 3 categories of creatures whom God creates in these verses: sea creatures, birds, and land creatures.  The land creatures are then further categorized as: livestock, wild animals, and creatures that move along the ground.  If God took the time to bring distinction to each of these categories, surely they must each have their own unique purpose.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;1:22 For the first time, (as recorded in scripture) God blesses something.  He blesses the creatures of the sea and winged birds.  His blessing appears to be in the form of a command: "Be fruitful and increase in number...."  Curiously, God does not give (recorded in Scripture) this same blessing/command to the creatures of the land.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;1:26 God creates man and explains the creation's (man's) purpose: to rule over the earth, fish of the sea, the birds of the air, the livestock, &amp; over the creatures that move along the ground.  (Funny that the specific category of "wild animals" is absent. Wonder if this is a translation issue? or is the list simply implicative of "all creatures"? or were "wild animals" intentionally left out?) God also describes man as being made in His own image - man is created to look like God... in some way.  ***Note that God says "our image" when referring to Himself.  This would support the idea that God is a plural entity. (The trinity.)&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;1:27 God creates male AND female in His image. He gives them each a distinction (denotes they are different) by giving them different names (male and female) but unites them in equality by giving them the same image (His own).&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;1:28 God gives His (second recorded by Scripture) blessing/commandment: "Be fruitful and increase in number ...." but this time He adds, "subdue it [the earth]".  This would indicate that (as noted in verse 26 &amp; as reiterated in this verse) man is different/ set apart from the animals, not only by the bearing of God's image, but also by his purpose/role here on earth. In being set as ruler over God's creation (under God of course), and in being given God's own image, it would seem that man (male &amp;amp; female) is unique in its position / value to God. Man is special to God.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;1:29 - 1:30 God makes a gift of His vegetation.  He gives it to "everything that has the breath of life in it" for food.  ***Note that there is no mention of either man or animals eating meat.  There is no mention of death.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;1:31 God not only says all that He made is "good", He says that it is "very good".&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;2:1 -2:3 Even God rests.  Perhaps He was pausing to enjoy the fruits of His labor (so to speak). Even today, I do not have a particular Bible study to share with you. I have been continuing my own studies, but I'm sorry to say, not with the written/academic approach I was using to post on this blog previously. I do intend to resume this form of study and to naturally resume such posts as before. However, I am realistic enough to realize that this is not likely to happen before the first of 2006. The reason, for those of you who do not know, is that I am pregnant and due to give birth in November. It is possible that I may post once or twice before than (particularly in October when I will no longer be working, but still pregnant). However, I make no promises. I apologize for this, but I'm trying to be honest. In the meantime, I hope that you will re-read, as I do, my many previous posts.  I continue to find encouragement and admonishment in God's Word and the stirring questions He provoked within me.  I hope you will as well.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;What I do have to say today is simple. For the last few days I have been struck by an overwhelming grattitude for God's blessings. It has made such a difference in my daily living. Little things that would normally cause me dismay seem to just slide off my back - they disappear from view in the big picture of everything He has done for me. I am overflowing with the joy that comes from grattitude. So, today I am writing simply to encourage you to look around you and take stock of the good things in your life. Take the time to truly appreciate them and to thank God for them- none of them are deserved.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I am sure that I used to know an appropriate verse or two for this thought, but my memory went out the window the day I got pregnant, so if anyone would like to suggest one, I'd be most grateful! I was struck by the layers of meaning and indisputable life applications.  I find it baffling that anyone could claim the Bible to be obsolete.&lt;p&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;font color=red&gt;“Keep me safe, O God, for in you I take refuge.” &lt;/font&gt;(v. 1)&lt;p&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;	How many dying people have cried out “Save me God!” ?   How many facing great peril (i.e. a plane crashing or a bear attack) have called out “Protect me God!” ?&lt;br&gt;&lt;br /&gt;     	In this verse David calls out “Keep me safe, O God”.  Does that not sound familiar?  Yet David adds that which seems only to be subconsciously acknowledged by today’s common prayers: “for in you I take refuge.”&lt;br&gt;&lt;br /&gt;	How many people presume upon God’s great powers to protect them in times of peril, yet refuse to trust those same powers to guide their lives?&lt;p&gt;   &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;font color=red&gt;“I said to the LORD, ‘You are my Lord; apart from you I have no good thing.’”&lt;/font&gt;(v.2)&lt;p&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;	David declares “You are my Lord”.  Is Jesus truly the Lord of your life?  Is He your King?  Do His commands supercede your selfish desires?  Do you seek His guidance in all that you do?  Do you pray to Him daily, continually?  How often do you read the Book that the Lord of Lords, Creator of all things, deigned to inspire for your instruction and His glory?  Does your life reflect His Lordship?&lt;br&gt;&lt;br /&gt;	Are your desires His desires? David says to God, “apart from you I have no good thing.”  Is an accomplishment truly of value if you have not achieved it by godly means?  Have you set your heart yearning for the things of God or have you become distracted by your own fleshly wants and ideas?  Before you pursue a thing, do you pray for wisdom to know whether God would have you do so? &lt;br&gt; &lt;br /&gt;	Do you acknowledge that God has given you all that you have?  Apart from God you could not breathe, could not eat, could not learn, could not work, could not love, - you could not exist apart from God.  How often do you acknowledge this truth?  Do you acknowledge it only with your words at a Sunday service, or does your life, too, reflect a gratitude for the God who has given it to you? &lt;p&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;font color=red&gt;“The sorrows of those will increase who run after other gods.  I will not pour out their libations of blood or take up their names on my lips.”&lt;/font&gt;(v. 4)&lt;p&gt;&lt;br /&gt;	&lt;br /&gt;	Many who read this verse will think, “I’m a Christian, this verse doesn’t apply to me. It’s for those who don’t believe in Christ.”  This is partially true, but mostly foolish.  First off it reveals a lack of compassion for the lost.  THEIR SORROWS WILL INCREASE – does your heart not break for them?  Secondly, let us not forget that even as Christians we can unwittingly raise up idols in our own lives.  Whether it be that person in our life whose advice we seek before/even without seeking God’s wisdom, or that car we spend all our time and efforts trying to attain while our Bible lies dusty on the shelf.  If your life is dominated by chasing after the things of this world,  if God is getting your time leftovers, then you too are increasing your own sorrow by running after “other gods.”&lt;p&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;font color=red&gt;“LORD, you have assigned me my portion and my cup; you have made my lot secure.  Surely I have a delightful inheritance.”&lt;/font&gt;(v. 5-6)&lt;p&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;	How joyous is the reading of these verses during times of triumph, how baffling in times of trial. &lt;p&gt;  &lt;br /&gt;	“LORD, you have assigned me my portion and my cup;”  At times this may lead you to think, “Oh thank you Lord! You are so good!” Yet at other times you may find yourself in doubt, “Is this true, Lord?  Could this really be your doing? Your plan for me?”  Regardless of the situation the Bible is clear here and in many other verses throughout the Bible: God is in control. &lt;br&gt;  &lt;br /&gt;	“The boundary lines have fallen for me in pleasant places; surely I have a delightful inheritance.”  My initial thought is that David was clearly experiencing a joyous moment.  (As confirmed by the rest of the Psalm.) But could we not also say this in our times of trial?  For what is trial but not to strengthen us and to bring glory to God?  Is this not what we live for? Sure, I'd read bits and pieces.  The whole first chapter at one point.  But I found myself confused and depressed and I just gave up and moved to another book.  However, now that I have grounded myself more firmly in the study of God's Word over the last couple of years, I find that I now understand the book more easily.  One key was understanding that when Solomon says "under the sun" he is referring to life apart from God.  I now see that there is rich meaning to be found within the book of Ecclesiastes, just as there is in each book of the Bible.  &lt;br /&gt;&lt;p&gt;There are so many particular points which struck home for me, it would take forever to discuss them all, and the points may be different for each of you, but I do think there are two things which we can all understand and take to heart.  The first is that, if God's glory is not the ultimate motivation for what you are doing, then your actions are meaningless, pointless, - as Solomon says, "chasing after the wind."  The other thing is something my pastor pointed out and it really stuck with me.  Have you ever wondered, "Does what I do &lt;i&gt;really&lt;/i&gt; matter?" , or "Is my life &lt;i&gt;really&lt;/i&gt; important in the big scheme of things?"   Well, the answer is a resounding YES!  As my pastor put it: &lt;h4&gt;"God has declared your life meaningful! Only this time they HAVE been told to evacuate.  The problem is they have no where to go.  All the hotels are booked.  So, they've boarded everything up and are planning to wait it out in their home along with their youngest son and his family.   The good news is that the hurricane slowed down over the Bahamas this morning.  The bad news is that it's expected to pick up speed again now that it's back on water.  It could reach hurricane 5 force (the largest possible) and is currently said to be larger than the entire state of Florida in size.  I think I'll refresh my memory on those verses and notes I used for my second posting "Attention Christians." My parents have finally been able to get through to my relatives in Florida and they have relayed to me that everyone is well there.  Amazingly, the hurricane went directly between the two cities where my relatives live.  They did experience hurricane conditions, but no damage to my knowledge, and most importantly, everyone is well. Well, today they issued evacuations for portions of the West Coast including, Hillsborough County, where my Bobcie Ginger, Bobcie Kay, and Djodju Lawrence live. (FYI: those are the polish names for grandma and grandpa- unsure of spelling.  Kay and Lawrence are my great grandparents &amp; Ginger's parents, who is my dad's mom.)  Their neighborhood is at Level F according to Hillsborough County's Evacuation Information Websight.  Currently only those neighborhoods at level A, B, &amp; C are being evacuated, but we all know the weather can surprise us.   Also, we have not been able to reach them all day- possibly due to increased phone usage in their area. This verse shames me. I read this and am convicted by all those times when I feel dread at the thought of reading God's Word- not because of what it says, but for the same reasons I feel dread at completing homework assignments.  Simply: because it's work. It's not always easy to understand God's Word, and you sometimes have to put in some real effort in crossreferencing verses, checking the Greek source of words, reading commentaries, etc. before you can honestly say that you have some understanding of what the verse truly means. (prayer goes w/o saying) This can sometimes be time consuming and if you're at all human, there are those times when you'd rather be (insert favorite hobby here) than sitting down and scouring pages for answers.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Yet, this verse expresses not just a willingness to study the laws, but a &lt;i&gt;longing&lt;/i&gt; for them.  It expresses a longing not limited to those Sunday afternoons when you've been especially inspired by that day's sermon, but a longing for God's laws "at all times."  For just a moment, sit quietly and imagine what that might look like in your own life: longing for God's law at all times. Did you picture it? What might Monday look like? Tuesday? Wednesday?  What things might suddenly take a back seat or monopolize less of your time, in order to make room for more study of God's Word?&lt;br&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I think the next time I feel myself getting that, "Do I have to?" feeling, I'll remember this verse and choose to "long to" instead. During my stay, I spent some time in Beijing where they had very sophisticated modes of transportation and clearly marked routes. I also spent some time in a much smaller city (comparatively) and even some time in the rural agricultural areas.  In each of these areas I found one common problem- I was always lost. Sure, I &lt;i&gt;might&lt;/i&gt; be able to trace my route back to where I'd come from that morning- IF I'd been paying close attention- but if not, forget it!&lt;br&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In the rural areas, streets meandered, crossed, and backtracked in any number of directions (unlike most of the United States where streets are laid out largely in a grid-like pattern) and were frequently unmarked.  In the smaller cities, street signs were random and infrequent, and again there was the problem of their meandering lay out. In Beijing, every street was clearly marked- in Chinese! So not only did I frequently become disoriented and have no means of reading a sign (should there be one), but very few streets outside the main couple of blocks of each city had dividing lines.  You may be thinking, "What's the big deal? We have plenty of one lane roads in the U.S. without lines." The problem here is that we're talking about 4 to 8 lane roads (two to four lanes in each direction)!  Combine that with the crazy number of cyclists competing with vehicles for road space, and pedestrians crossing at any given point along the road, and you can see how confusing the whole situation becomes!&lt;br&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Now, I wouldn't believe it if I hadn't seen and experienced it for myself, but yes, the drivers there actually seem to know what they're doing. I'm not familiar with their license standards or education requirements, but one way or another there is a common knowledge of how to conduct oneself amid what we Americans might view as chaos.&lt;br&gt; &lt;br /&gt;"What," you ask "does this have to do with Psalm 119:19?" Well, the verse brought me back to these memories and showed me that without God's law to guide my life in this world, I'm very much a stranger in a foreign land without any knowledge of where I should go and/or how to get there.  Without God's law, I'm just as lost spiritually here on earth, as I was physically lost in China.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Specifically, this verse places me at an exact moment in time when I had gotten lost inside a mall in Beijing, only to find my way back to our group's meeting spot and find them already gone on to the next stop. I had been to far too many places that day to retrace our route back to the small university where we were staying, and I couldn't even remember the name of it.  I just stood there, helplessly wondering what in the world I was going to do. (And believe you me, I was PRAYING!) The thought, "I'm alone in a strange land, please don't leave me!" would quite aptly have described the situation. So, when I read, "I am a stranger on earth; do not hide your commands from me." The only way for you to understand God's commands is for Him to give you an understanding, through the guidance of the Holy Spirit. Notice how boldly the author requests this understanding. Although we are always to have a reverence and awe of the Lord, we should never hesitate in requesting further understanding of His will and of His Word. &lt;p&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;h3&gt;Make this verse a daily prayer!  Memorize it and pray it for yourself before beginning any reading of God's Word!&lt;/h3&gt;&lt;br&gt; &lt;br /&gt;Although I believe it would be beneficial to memorize as much of God's Word as possible, there are few verses I really push for.  This is one of them. Please take the time to write this down and post it somewhere you will see each day. Another copy tucked inside the cover of your Bible would be a good idea. It is a gift from God, in whom I can trust.  God is faithful and my soul can rest/ find peace, in this knowledge. &lt;br&gt;&lt;br /&gt;To me, this means that my most important concern- my eternal destination- is not a concern after all. One more thing that I can check off the list of things to worry about. (Of course if you have a worry list- as many do- see also my second posting, "Attention Christians".)&lt;p&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;"&lt;font color=gray&gt;2&lt;/font&gt; He alone is my rock and my salvation; he is my fortress, I will never be shaken."&lt;/b&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;i&gt;How I read this:&lt;/i&gt;&lt;br&gt;&lt;br /&gt;God alone is my foundation; the security I can trust in. Only God can save me. God is my protection. Because God surrounds me, I am safe. He keeps me strong. &lt;br&gt;&lt;br /&gt;To me this brings a peace in knowing that I am not alone in my struggles. It reminds me that God is watching over and protecting me, and that with Him as my foundation, I am strong. &lt;br&gt; Whenever the Bible speaks of God as our rock, I picture myself clinging to a rock in the middle of a raging sea.  Though all else about me is tossed about, damaged, confused, or even destroyed, I will remain safe as long as I cling to that rock.  Of course the rock symbolizes God's Word and clinging to the rock is a representation of trusting in God.  Some days, when I feel that there is just too much on my plate, that there are not enough hours in the day, and that there is no way out of my current predicament, I remember this picture, return to His Word, and find comfort. &lt;p&gt;&lt;br /&gt; &lt;b&gt;"&lt;font color=gray&gt;3&lt;/font&gt; How long will you assault a man? Would all of you throw him down- this leaning wall, this tottering fence? &lt;font color=gray&gt;4&lt;/font&gt; They fully intend to topple him from his lofty place; they take delight in lies. With their mouths they bless, but in their hearts they curse. Selah"&lt;/b&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Though this psalm is thought to have been written by David (and possibly during the time when Sau's family sought to dethrone him), for some reason these verses bring to mind the story of Joseph.  He was but a small boy, thrown easily into a pit by his brothers, who then outwardly expressed sorrow before there father while inwardly delighting in what they thought to be Joseph's demise.  Yet as I read these verses, it is not that part of the story which immediately comes to mind.  Instead I am reminded of the scene which occurs when Joseph reveals himself to his brothers as the Pharaoh's right-hand-man. Loosely paraphrased, he basically says to his brothers, "What you intended for evil, God meant for good.  You thought you were in control, but you forgot that God was in control." (Genesis 45:4-9) &lt;br&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Both the story of Joseph and these verses remind me that our lives are not dependant on our own strength! No matter how helpless we may be to change the course of our lives, we can take comfort that God is in control.  Though we may go through the mire and the muck, we can trust that God has a purpose for our suffering and that He will not leave us to suffer alone, but will be our rock through the storm.  &lt;br&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In taking a second look at these verses, the words "lies", "mouths", and "curse" jump out and remind me that those who would do us harm are not always honestly evil.  Their intentions are not always immediately apparent, and so it is, also, with those who would lead us spiritually astray.  I am reminded to stay on my guard and never take a Biblical teaching at face value, but always seek out the truth for myself, through careful study of God's own Word.  For only God is perfect and never fails. &lt;br&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;"&lt;font color=gray&gt;5&lt;/font&gt; Find rest, O my soul, in God alone; my hope comes from him. &lt;font color=gray&gt;6&lt;/font&gt; He alone is my rock and my salvation; he is my fortress, I will not be shaken."&lt;/b&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;i&gt;How I read this:&lt;/i&gt;&lt;br&gt;&lt;br /&gt;This is a repetition of the idea that only God is constant, only God is worthy of our trust, only God is a secure source of hope; and whoever trusts in Him finds peace and rest for their soul.  Again we are reminded that in our trouble, God will protect us and make us strong.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br /&gt;	&lt;i&gt;**I find it important to point out that this psalm does not say that no trouble will come to those who trust in the Lord, but that God can be trusted in the midst of the trouble.**&lt;/i&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;"&lt;font color=gray&gt;7&lt;/font&gt; My salvation and honor depend on God; he is my mighty rock, my refuge."&lt;/b&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;i&gt;How I read this:&lt;/i&gt;&lt;br&gt;&lt;br /&gt;My salvation depends on God (not me &amp; not others).  My honor depends on God (not me &amp; not others).  God is MIGHTY, strong, and lasting. God is my refuge. &lt;br&gt;&lt;br /&gt;"salvation" : I don't know about you, but I find relief in the knowledge that it is not up to me to earn my salvation.  "honor" : I am reminded not to look to others for their evaluation of my worth/honor, but to conduct myself in a way that God would find honorable.  I am also reminded that my only true honor/value comes from being a child of God- through the gift of salvation. "mighty" : God is not only the rock that I cling to in the storm, He is fully capable and strong enough to do any job.  "refuge" : A refuge is the place that one seeks in their time of trouble.  If a Christian experienced no trouble or suffering they would have no need for a refuge.  In the midst of trouble, God is there to shelter and comfort you.&lt;p&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;"&lt;font color=gray&gt;8&lt;/font&gt; Trust in him at all times, O people; pour out your hearts to him, for God is our refuge. Selah"&lt;/b&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;i&gt;The first thing I must say: &lt;/i&gt;&lt;br&gt;&lt;br /&gt;How amazing that God's own Word urges us to pour out our hearts to him!  This alone testifies to God's love for His people.  Can you imagine, that the God who not only rules, but even created the world and everything in it, wants you to speak to Him in prayer? &lt;br&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Trust in Him at all times.  Not just when things are going well.  Not just when things are going as expected.  Not just when things are going poorly.  Not just when you understand. Trust in Him at all times.  Sometimes, this command can be very difficult to follow- especially when you don't understand why something is happening, or when you can't see the light at the end of the tunnel, or even when you're being blessed while someone you esteem higher than yourself is suffering. Yet there is no qualifier here or anywhere else in the Bible.  You must trust in God at all times. Period.  In order to do that, you must first understand Who it is that you are putting your trust in.  The only way to truly understand God (as best we can) is through the study of His Word. (Funny how it all seems to come back to that.) &lt;br&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Again the Psalm says that God is our refuge.  Clearly this is an important point they want the reader/listener to remember.  Perhaps the repetition will help us remember to turn to Him when trouble comes. &lt;p&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;"&lt;font color=gray&gt;9&lt;/font&gt; Lowborn men are but a breath, the highborn are but a lie; if weighed on a balance, they are nothing; together they are only a breath."&lt;/b&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The unimportance of a man's social standing is clear here. More importantly, I think the author is pointing out how unimportant the threats of frail, misguided men are when compared to an almighty and trustworthy God. &lt;p&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;"&lt;font color=gray&gt;10&lt;/font&gt; Do not trust in extortion or take pride in stolen goods; though your riches increase, do not set your heart on them."&lt;/b&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I think two things can be taken from this verse. 1: do not rely on or take pride in your own devices to get what you want. 2: do not make wealth (or other things of this world) the desire of your heart.  Tie in the rest of the psalm and you can see that you are to make God the desire of your heart instead, for He is your source of security and peace- not wealth or social standing. &lt;p&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;"&lt;font color=gray&gt;11&lt;/font&gt; One thing God has spoken, two things have I heard: that you, O God, are strong, 12 and that you, O Lord, are loving. Surely you will reward each person according to what he has done."&lt;/b&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Here the psalmist expresses trust in God's truthfulness and faithfulness.  Look at the two words he uses to describe God: strong and loving.  God is capable of doing what He has promised and He cares about His people. I was surprised and ashamed to admit that I had not done an indepth study on such a seemingly basic aspect of Christianity.  In attempting to rectify my ignorance, I came across an incredibly helpful article.  I found it's writings on hell to be both fascinating and biblically based.  My favorite aspect is that the author gives references to each of the numerous scriptures as he uses them.   The main portion of the article is simply too large to post here, so in a stray from my usual writing, I have copied a very small portion of this excellent study -ironically the portion least to do with hell- and pasted it here. God’s wrath is great, but it is not greater than God’s love revealed in Jesus Christ. God has provided only one way to escape eternal torment and obtain eternal life. “Jesus said to him, ‘I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me’” (Jn. 14:6).&lt;p&gt;&lt;br /&gt;If you believe in Jesus Christ and what He accomplished in His life, death and resurrection, then you will have eternal life. Only Christ’s blood has the power to wash away sin. Christ experienced the full brunt of God’s curse and wrath against sin on the cross in His own body so that those who believe in Him will not have to experience that wrath. Christ lived a sinless life to provide the perfect righteousness to enter heaven.&lt;p&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Jesus Christ’s mission on earth was twofold. First, He had to live a perfect, sinless life. You and I are both sinners; we have failed to obey God’s law. But Jesus Christ in His human nature was born without sin. He lived His whole life in perfect obedience to God’s law. If you believe in Jesus Christ, His perfect obedience is imputed or credited to you. You are a sinner and deserve to go to hell, but if you trust in Christ you will be clothed with His perfect righteousness. On the day of judgment, when God looks upon all those who believe in Jesus Christ, He will see perfect obedience, perfect righteousness. It is solely on account of Christ’s merits—His objective righteousness—that Christians gain entrance into heaven. Your supposed good deeds contribute nothing to your salvation.&lt;p&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Second, Jesus Christ had to die a bloody, sacrificial death for His people (the elect). Because of your sins you are guilty before God; the wrath of God rests upon you. You are an enemy of God and alienated from Him. You are in bondage to Satan, sin and death. But if you believe in Christ, your sin and guilt are placed upon Him on the cross. God’s righteous wrath and indignation against your sin are appeased and set aside, because Christ bore the full penalty for your sin in your stead. The enmity and alienation from God that you caused by your rebellion against Him are fully absolved by Christ’s death. If you believe in Jesus, you and God are no longer enemies but friends.&lt;p&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Christ restores our friendship and fellowship with God; He reconciles us to God. “For one will hardly die for a righteous man; though perhaps for the good man someone would dare even to die. But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. Much more then, having now been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from the wrath of God through Him. For if while we were enemies, we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son, much more, having been reconciled, we shall be saved by His life” (Rom. 5:7-10).&lt;p&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Only the incarnate Son of God could provide the sinless, sacrificial death needed for sin’s removal. And only the perfect, sinless life of Christ can provide the imputed righteousness needed so that God could be both just and the justifier of those who believe in Jesus Christ. God did not overlook sin; He dealt with it head-on in Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ rose from the dead, victorious over sin, Satan and death. If you believe in Him, His victory becomes your victory. “If you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you shall be saved.... Whoever believes in Him will not be disappointed” (Rom. 10:9, 11).&lt;br /&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;h3&gt;&lt;b&gt;Your Obligation&lt;/h3&gt;&lt;/b&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;br /&gt;If you have placed your trust in Jesus Christ, as He is revealed in the Scriptures, then you are completely justified before God and clothed with Christ’s perfect righteousness. Although a person contributes nothing to his salvation, true believers show their love and gratitude toward Christ by obeying His revealed will. Jesus said, “If you love Me, keep My commandments” (Jn. 14:15). True saving faith always issues forth unto a life of obedience (Mt. 7:16-20; Heb. 3:12-19; 4:2, 6; Jas. 2:14-20, 26; 1 Jn. 1:5-10); therefore, you should obey God by being baptized and becoming a member of Christ’s church. It is absolutely vital to your spiritual growth that you use the means of grace: prayer, the Word and the sacraments in the public worship of God. Attend a church that obeys the Bible as God’s inspired and infallible Word—Becoming a regular part of Christ’s church is mandatory for the believer: “Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some, but exhorting one another, and so much the more as you see the Day approaching” (Heb. 10:25). Remember, Jesus warned you of the wrath to come and the eternal punishment of hell so that you would turn to Him. With my lips I recount all the laws that come from your mouth.  I rejoice in following your statutes as one rejoices in great riches.  I meditate on your precepts and consider your ways.  I delight in your decrees; I will not neglect your word."&lt;/i&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;p&gt;Again the psalmist requests God's help in learning His decrees and proclaims the benefits of knowing and following them.  He compares his joy in this, to that of possessing great riches. He declares his complete enjoyment in following and knowing God's decrees and declares that he will not neglect God's Word.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;p&gt;What do you suppose it might look like, practically, to neglect God's Word? To my mind it could take a number of forms.  First, the neglect of reading God's Word at all (in favor of some other activity perhaps) would seem an obvious answer.  Second, there is the reading of God's Word, but neglecting to put it into action in one's day to day life (for example: commiting adultery despite the Bible clearly declaring it to be a sin). Then, there is a neglect which I believe to be more subtle and more easily fallen into:  the neglect to truly &lt;i&gt;study&lt;/i&gt; God's Word, instead of simply breezing through it at the speed you would a bedtime story or an interesting news article.  &lt;br /&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;b&gt;Unfortunately, many people, spend more time searching for depth of meaning in a piece of classic literary fiction and more time memorizing bits of scholarly texts, than they do studying their Bible.&lt;/b&gt;  &lt;br /&gt;&lt;p&gt;Often times the Bible is turned to as a source of counseling in time of need- and that is good.  The problem arises when someone flips open their Bible, reads one or two chapters at best and suddenly decides they know what those verses are trying to say and that they know the answer to their problem.  Now, sometimes, yes, it can happen that way, but many times their are layers, and circumstances, and crossreferences which can cast an entirely new light on a given set of verses.  &lt;br /&gt;&lt;p&gt;No portion of the Bible is meant to stand alone. As the true and living Word of God, it must all work together to present God's message.  Where one verse may appear to say one thing at first glance, there may be another verse which seems to directly contradict it, again at first glance.  Yet when you take those same two verses and add in their contexts and a thorough knowledge of the Bible as a whole, you may find that either a new understanding of one or the other of the verses is revealed, or that the two seemingly exclusive verses actually coexist. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;p&gt;*** I know that there are those who would say that portions of the Bible contradict each other and therefore we must carefully choose which to believe and which to discard, but I hold that this is an impossibility as God does not lie, and if it is not Truth than it is a lie. There are portions (such as cultural laws) which were circumstancially based, but there is still truth and a knowledge of God to be gained from them.  I believe that the Bible must be studied and accepted in its entirety or not at all. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;p&gt;Note: As always, I include myself in any exhortations.  I have no delusions of perfection. By living according to your word.  I seek you with all my heart; do not let me stray from your commands. I have hidden your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you."&lt;/i&gt;  &lt;br /&gt;&lt;p&gt;This is an obvious answer to my rhetorical question from the previous verses.  These verses very clearly state that to think you can live a pure and sinless life which strictly follows Gods commands, without reading, studying, and memorizing God's Word, is pure foolishness.  &lt;br /&gt;&lt;p&gt;In its plea for God's help in obeying His law, it clearly implies that we cannot attempt to do so on our own.  Do not forget to include prayer in your day to day goings and comings.  I vaguely recall an old saying about hemming a day in prayer to keep it from unraveling. Blessed are they who keep his statutes and seek him with all their heart.  They do nothing wrong; they walk in his ways.  You have laid down precepts that are to be fully obeyed.  Oh, that my ways were steadfast in obeying your decrees! Then I would not be put to shame when I consider all your commands.  I will praise you with an upright heart as I learn your righteous laws.  I will obey your decrees; do not utterly forsake me."&lt;/i&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;p&gt;In verses 1-4, the psalmist proclaims the benefits, goodness, and rightness of obeying God's commands.  In verse 5 he admits his failure in steadfastly obeying those same commands.  Yet it is not with a hardened heart that he admits his sin, but with a broken one. He doesn't make excuses for his failings, but pleas for mercy and vows to  overcome his failings- to continue to learn the Lord's laws and obey them.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;p&gt;How closely I can identify with these verses! How many times have I felt the shame of having sinned- again? How many times have I picked up the remote, talked on the phone, or otherwise whittled away time I might have spent studying God's Word? Then the LORD said to him, “Reach out your hand and take it by the tail.”  So Moses reached out and took hold of the snake and it turned back into a staff in his hand.  &lt;/font&gt;&lt;br&gt;&lt;br /&gt;(Ex 4:3-4) &lt;p&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Note that God did not explain what would happen when Moses picked it up.  He just told him to do so. Would you have picked up the snake? Would you have hesitated?&lt;p&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;font color=red&gt;Then Moses stretched out his hand over the sea, and all that night the LORD drove the sea back with a strong east wind and turned it into dry land. The waters were divided, and the Israelites went through the sea on dry ground, with a wall of water on their right and on their left. &lt;/font&gt;&lt;br&gt;&lt;br /&gt;(Ex 14:21-22) &lt;p&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;i&gt; Would you have volunteered to be the first to cross between the walls of water? &lt;/i&gt; &lt;p&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;font color=red&gt;The LORD said to Moses, “I have heard the grumbling of the Israelites. Then you will know that I am the LORD your God.’”  That evening quail came and covered the camp, and in the morning there was a layer of dew around the camp.  When the dew was gone, thin flakes like frost on the ground appeared on the desert floor.  When the Israelites saw it, they said to each other, “What is it?” For they did not know what it was.  Moses said to them, “It is the bread the LORD has given you to eat.”…….The people of Israel called the bread manna.  It was white like coriander seed and tasted like wafers made with honey.&lt;/font&gt;&lt;br&gt;&lt;br /&gt;(Ex 16:11-15,31) &lt;p&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;i&gt; Would you have been the first to eat the quail? The first to try the dew flakes? &lt;/i&gt; &lt;p&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;h3&gt;&lt;b&gt; Do you believe . . . &lt;/b&gt;&lt;/h3&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;i&gt; God is the Creator of all things &lt;/i&gt; &lt;p&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;font color=red&gt;In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. . . .  And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. . . .  And God said, “Let there be an expanse between the waters to separate water from water.” . . .  And God said, “Let the water under the sky be gathered to one place and let dry ground appear.”  And it was so. . . .  Then God said, “Let the land produce vegetation . . .” And it was so. . . .  And God said, “Let there be lights in the expanse of the sky to separate the day from night, and let them serve as signs to mark seasons and days and years, and let them be lights in the expanse of the sky to give light on the earth.” And it was so. . . .  And God said, “Let the water teem with living creatures, and let the birds fly above the earth across the expanse of the sky.” . . .  And God said, “Let the land produce living creatures according to their kinds . . .” And it was so.  &lt;/font&gt;&lt;br&gt;&lt;br /&gt;(Genesis 1:1,3,6,9,11,14-15,20,24, emphasis mine) &lt;p&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;i&gt; Do you notice how powerful God’s Word is? &lt;/i&gt; &lt;p&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;font color=red&gt;The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands. &lt;/font&gt;&lt;br&gt;&lt;br /&gt;(Psalm 19:1) &lt;p&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;i&gt; When you look around this world, do you see the power of God’s Word? &lt;/i&gt; &lt;p&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;h3&gt;&lt;b&gt; Do you believe . . .  &lt;/b&gt;&lt;/h3&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;i&gt; God is in Control &lt;/i&gt; &lt;p&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;font color=red&gt;which God will bring about in his own time – God, the blessed and only Ruler, the King of kings, and Lord of lords, &lt;/font&gt;&lt;br&gt;&lt;br /&gt;(1 Timothy 6:15) &lt;p&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;font color=red&gt;Pharoah’s officials said to him, “How long will this man be a snare to us?  Let the people go, so that they may worship the LORD their God.  Do you not yet realize that Egypt is ruined?” &lt;/font&gt;&lt;br&gt;&lt;br /&gt;(Exodus 10:7 ) &lt;p&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;i&gt; Do you believe that God can ruin the United States of America? France? Iraq? Saudi Arabia? Switzerland? China? &lt;/i&gt; &lt;p&gt;&lt;br /&gt;(Speaking to Abram) &lt;br&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;font color=red&gt;“I will make you into a great nation and I will bless you….” &lt;/font&gt;&lt;br&gt;&lt;br /&gt;(Genesis 12:2) &lt;p&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;i&gt; Do you believe that God can raise up any nation he so chooses, today? &lt;/i&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;font color=red&gt;“Praise be to the name of God for ever and ever; wisdom and power are his.  He changes times and seasons; he sets up kings and deposes them.  He gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge to the discerning.  He reveals deep and hidden things; he knows what lies in darkness, and light dwells with him.  I thank and praise you, O God of my fathers:  You have given me wisdom and power, you have made known to me what we asked of you, you have made known to us the dream of the king.”&lt;/font&gt;&lt;br&gt;&lt;br /&gt;(Daniel 2:20-23) &lt;p&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;i&gt; Do you believe that God is in control of time? Of the seasons?  &lt;p&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Do you believe that God is in control of who becomes/stays president of the United States? Of Germany? &lt;p&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Do you believe God had control over whether Hitler came to power or not? &lt;p&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Do you believe that God is in control of how wise you become? &lt;p&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Do you believe that God is in control of how much and what knowledge you have? &lt;/i&gt; &lt;p&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;h3&gt;&lt;b&gt; Do you believe . . . &lt;/b&gt;&lt;/h3&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;i&gt; God is Faithful &lt;/i&gt; &lt;p&gt;&lt;br /&gt;God who has called you into fellowship with his Son Jesus Christ our Lord, is faithful. &lt;p&gt;&lt;br /&gt;(1Corinthians 1:9) &lt;p&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;font color=red&gt;….And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear.  But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it. &lt;/font&gt;&lt;br&gt;&lt;br /&gt;(1Corinthians 10:13) &lt;p&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;i&gt; Do you trust God not to allow you to experience anything more than you can handle through His strength? &lt;/i&gt; &lt;p&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;font color=red&gt;a faith and knowledge resting on the hope of eternal life, which God, who does not lie, promised before the beginning of time, &lt;/font&gt;&lt;br&gt;&lt;br /&gt;(Titus 1:2, emphasis mine) &lt;p&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;i&gt; Do you know all the promises God has made? &lt;/i&gt;  &lt;p&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;h3&gt;&lt;b&gt;Do you believe . . . &lt;/b&gt;&lt;/h3&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;i&gt; God Cares &lt;/i&gt; &lt;p&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;font color=red&gt;Who, being in very nature of God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, but made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness.  And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself and became obedient to death – even death on the cross. &lt;/font&gt;&lt;br&gt;&lt;br /&gt;(Philippians 2:6-8) &lt;p&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;i&gt; Would you give up everything and become a slave in a third world country in order to minister to them, knowing that most would reject, mock, and persecute you? Knowing that it would cost you your life?  &lt;p&gt;&lt;br /&gt;(This is a poor comparison.) &lt;/i&gt; &lt;p&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;font color=red&gt;But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. &lt;/font&gt;&lt;br&gt;&lt;br /&gt;(Romans 5:8) &lt;p&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;font color=red&gt;Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.”  And they divided up his clothes by casting lots. &lt;/font&gt;&lt;br&gt;&lt;br /&gt;(Luke 23:34) &lt;p&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;i&gt; In the midst of being murdered, Jesus forgave his murderers!  Do you know of any more loving act? &lt;/i&gt; &lt;p&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;font color=red&gt;During those days another large crowd gathered.  Since they had nothing to eat Jesus called his disciples to him and said, “I have compassion for these people; they have already been with me three days and have nothing to eat.  If I send them home hungry, they will collapse on the way, because some of them have come a long distance.”  …He told the crowd to sit down on the ground.  When he had taken the seven loaves and given thanks, he broke them and gave them to his disciples to set before the people, and they did so.  They had a few small fish as well; he gave thanks for them also and told the disciples to distribute them.  The people ate and were satisfied.  Afterward the disciples picked up seven basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over.  About four thousand men were present…. &lt;/font&gt;&lt;br&gt;&lt;br /&gt;(Mark 8:1-3, 6-9, emphasis mine) &lt;p&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;i&gt; Do you believe that God cares about your needs?  &lt;/i&gt; &lt;p&gt;&lt;br /&gt;(Jonah tried to run from what the Lord knew was best for him.) &lt;br&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;font color=red&gt;But the LORD provided a great fish to swallow Jonah, and Jonah was inside the fish three days and three nights. From inside the fish Jonah prayed to the LORD his God. “….But I, with a song of thanksgiving, will sacrifice to you.  What I have vowed I will make good…..” And the LORD commanded the fish, and it vomited Jonah onto dry land. &lt;/font&gt;&lt;br&gt;&lt;br /&gt;(Jonah 1:17, 2:1,10) &lt;p&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;i&gt; Do you believe that God continues to care about you, even when you sin?  &lt;p&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Would you have given thanks amidst such seemingly hopeless conditions? &lt;/i&gt; &lt;p&gt; &lt;br /&gt;&lt;h3&gt;&lt;b&gt; &lt;i&gt; What are you worried about?&lt;/i&gt;&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/h3&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;font color=red&gt; “So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the pagans run after these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them.  But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.  Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself.  Each day has enough trouble of its own.” &lt;/font&gt;&lt;br&gt;&lt;br /&gt;(Matthew 6:31-34) &lt;p&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;i&gt; Do you believe that God, who created you and gave your body life, knows and cares about your daily needs?  &lt;/i&gt; &lt;p&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;font color=red&gt;Then he got into the boat and his disciples followed him.  Without warning, a furious storm came up on the lake, so that the waves swept over the boat.  But Jesus was sleeping.  The disciples went and woke him, saying, “Lord, save us! We’re going to drown!”  He replied, “You of little faith, why are you so afraid?”  Then he got up and rebuked the winds and the waves, and it was completely calm.  The men were amazed and asked, “What kind of man is this?  Even the winds and the waves obey him!” &lt;/font&gt;&lt;br&gt; &lt;br /&gt;(Matthew 8:23-27)  &lt;p&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;i&gt; In the midst of the storms of your life, do not forget that God is in control! &lt;/i&gt; &lt;p&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;font color=red&gt;During the fourth watch of the night Jesus went out to them, walking on the lake. … “Come,” he said.  Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on water and came toward Jesus.  But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, “Lord, save me!”  Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him.  “You of little faith,” he said, “why did you doubt?”  &lt;/font&gt;&lt;br&gt;&lt;br /&gt;(Matthew 4:25,29-31) &lt;p&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;i&gt; The wind did not suddenly appear.  It was always there.  The difference was “Peter saw it.”  He took his eyes off Jesus and fear overcame him.  It is only when we forget to look toward God that we begin to sink into fear and worry.  &lt;/i&gt; &lt;p&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;font color=red&gt;Delight yourself in the LORD and he will give you the desires of your heart.  Commit your way to the LORD; trust in him and he will do this: He will make your righteousness shine like the dawn, the justice of your cause like the noonday sun.  Be still before the LORD and wait patiently for him; do not fret when men succeed in their ways, when they carry out their wicked schemes. . . . I was young and now I am old, yet I have never seen the righteous forsaken or their children begging bread. . . . . The mouth of the righteous man utters wisdom, and his tongue speaks what is just.  The law of God is in his heart; his feet do not slip. . . . The salvation of the righteous comes from the LORD; he is their stronghold in time of trouble.  The LORD helps them and delivers them; he delivers them from the wicked and saves them, because they take refuge in him.   &lt;/font&gt;&lt;br&gt;&lt;br /&gt;(Psalm 37:4-7, 25, 30-31, 39-40, reading the entire Psalm highly recommended) &lt;p&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;i&gt; It’s all about your focus! Do you find joy in the LORD or in things going your way? Do you trust in His timing or are you anxiously checking your watch every five seconds? Do you keep His Word in your heart and on your tongue? Do you know Him well enough to trust Him in times of trouble? &lt;/i&gt; &lt;p&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Philippians 4:6-9 contains two similar promises.  Can you see them? &lt;p&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;font color=red&gt;Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.  &lt;b&gt; And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.  &lt;/b&gt; Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable – if anything is excellent or praiseworthy – think about such things.  Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me – put it into practice.  &lt;b&gt; And the God of peace will be with you. &lt;/b&gt; &lt;/font&gt;&lt;br&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;i&gt; I’ve noted the promises in black, but note the rhythm of these verses:  if you do this, I’ll do that. &lt;p&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I.E.   If you present your requests to God by prayer and petition &lt;b&gt; with thanksgiving &lt;/b&gt; (giving your anxiety to God) His peace will guard your heart and your mind.  And this peace will not depend on whether you understand your circumstances, or on  whether your circumstances change so that it makes sense for you to have peace.  &lt;/i&gt; &lt;p&gt;&lt;br /&gt;______________________________________________________ &lt;p&gt;&lt;br /&gt;******************************************************  &lt;p&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;h3&gt;&lt;b&gt; Check Your Status: &lt;/b&gt;&lt;/h3&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;i&gt; What are you seeking? Where is your focus? If you really want to be sure, try this: &lt;/i&gt; &lt;p&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Get out a sheet of paper. Make two columns on each side of the paper.   &lt;p&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;i&gt; On the front side:  &lt;/i&gt; Use the first column to list all major events which occupied your time this week and approx. how much of your time (i.e. television, work, school, cooking, crafts, sports, etc.).  The second column for each verse/chapter that you have read, each time you sang worship to the Lord, and each time you performed a service/ministry in the Lord’s name.   &lt;p&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;i&gt; On the back side: &lt;/i&gt; Use the first column for the things you have worried over for the last week (big or small).  Copy the second column from the front side.  &lt;p&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Which of these columns is longer and/or which totals a larger portion of your time?  &lt;p&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt; The next time you catch yourself worrying, ask these questions: &lt;/b&gt; &lt;p&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;h4&gt;&lt;i&gt; Could God handle this issue? 	&lt;/i&gt;&lt;/h4&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;br /&gt;	Yes, with His Power. (He is in control.) &lt;p&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;h4&gt;&lt;i&gt; Why would God handle this issue? 	&lt;/i&gt;&lt;/h4&gt;&lt;p&gt;	&lt;br /&gt;	For His glory and because of His Love. (He cares about me and those I love.) &lt;p&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;h4&gt;&lt;i&gt; In what way would God handle this issue? 	&lt;/i&gt;&lt;/h4&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;br /&gt;	With Wisdom. The title is derived from Psalm 119 : 35.
